Fraction Wall

Made for the kind of play that earns shelf space

A fraction wall lets a child see for themselves why two quarters and one half take up the same space. Thirty-nine hardwood tiles stack row by row against a solid whole, from one all the way down to tenths, so equivalence becomes something a child can line up with their fingers rather than something they have to take on faith.

Each row is one whole cut a different way: halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths, and tenths, and every tile is engraved with its fraction. Moving tiles between rows is how a child discovers that three sixths fill the same space as one half, or that a fifth is smaller than a fourth even though five is bigger than four.

The tray is laser-cut from Baltic birch, and the tiles are cut from solid maple or solid cherry at a quarter inch thick and finished by hand with food-safe beeswax and jojoba oil. Choose pale maple or warm cherry tiles.

It fits naturally alongside Montessori math, Singapore Math, and most elementary fraction units, and it holds a classroom's worth of fraction work in a single tray for a homeschool shelf or a teacher's math center. Wood is a natural material, and grain and tone vary slightly from piece to piece. We think that is part of the charm.
